How to Clean a Bosch Coffee Machine: Descale, Brew Unit and Milk System
"Bosch coffee machine" covers three different kinds of machine, and each is cleaned differently. A fully automatic machine grinds beans and has a brew unit, a milk system and a descaling programme on its display. A Tassimo capsule machine reads a barcode and is cleaned with a yellow service disc. A filter coffee maker drips water through ground coffee and is descaled with a product and the instruction manual. The steps for one can damage another, so the first job is to know which you own.
This guide takes the three in turn, using Bosch's own support pages and, for Tassimo, the Tassimo brand's own pages, which are not Bosch pages and which we label as such. We name the source and the machine type for every step. The pages are mostly from Bosch UK and Bosch US, with South Africa and Ireland for filter machines. We found no Bosch UAE page on cleaning, so these are regional and your own instruction manual comes first.
We are an independent Bosch appliance repair company, not the manufacturer, and we are not an authorised Bosch agent. If your coffee machine is inside Bosch's warranty, contact Bosch first.
At a glance
- Descaling a fully automatic machine: Bosch UK says about once a month, takes about 21 minutes, and uses Bosch tablets or liquid descaler. If the display says the machine is overdue, it will lock until you descale
- Calc'n Clean: one programme that descales and cleans, about 26 minutes
- Milk system: rinse weekly or as needed. Residue left in it can turn rancid
- Brew unit: wash by hand under running water. Never with washing-up liquid and never in the dishwasher
- Tassimo: a monthly rinse with the service disc and a descale about four times a year, per the Tassimo site. It says never to use vinegar
- Filter coffee makers: Bosch's pages we read give no steps. They point to the manual and a tested descaler
Which Bosch coffee machine do you have?
Look at how you make the coffee.
| If you... | You have | Cleaned with |
|---|---|---|
| Pour in beans and the machine grinds them | A fully automatic machine (VeroCafe, VeroBarista and similar) | Display programmes: Descale, Calc'n Clean, Rinse Milk System. A removable brew unit on many models |
| Insert a pod with a barcode | A Tassimo capsule machine | A yellow service disc and descaling tablets |
| Pour water into a tank and drip it through ground coffee into a jug | A filter coffee maker | A descaler, and the instruction manual |
What Bosch UAE and UAE retailers list
We checked on 2 November 2026. Bosch UAE's coffee machine category showed four coffee machines and one grinder, with no Load more button:
| Model | Type shown on Bosch UAE |
|---|---|
| TIG20301 | Fully automatic, Series 2 (VeroCafe Silk), silver |
| TPG40307 | Fully automatic, Series 4 (VeroCafe), piano black |
| CTL7181B0 | Built-in fully automatic, Series 8, black |
| TKA2M113GB | Filter, MyMoment, black |
The category page lists no capsule or Tassimo machine, and shows no feature details for any model.
ACE had two of them. The TIG20301 was AED 1,699, reduced from AED 3,029, with a 1.4 litre tank and a "Calc'n Clean function" that "guides you step-by-step through descaling and cleaning". The CTL7181B0 was AED 10,799, reduced from AED 12,999, with a 2.4 litre tank, an integrated milk system, a 500 g bean container, a TFT display, Home Connect, and a "Free 3 Year Warranty" banner. ACE lists its drip tray, milk container and water tank as dishwasher safe, a point we come back to in the milk system section. Neither ACE page says whether the brew unit is removable.
We did not read the Bosch UAE pages for the TPG40307 or TKA2M113GB, and we found no UAE listing for a Tassimo machine. Seven of the eleven searches that lead to this page name the Tassimo, so the page covers it, based on the Tassimo brand's own pages.
If you are not sure what you own, look for the model code on the base or the back. Send us a photo when you book and we confirm the type before we visit.
Cleaning, descaling and Calc'n Clean: what each does
Three words are used loosely, and Bosch uses them for different programmes.
Cleaning is the programme or job that deals with coffee residue. Bosch's US page runs it with a cleaning tablet, and does not define it further. On the UK pages, brew unit and milk system cleaning are separate jobs.
Descaling removes limescale. It uses a descaling tablet or liquid, dissolved in the water tank, and the machine runs it through itself.
Calc'n Clean does both in one programme. The Bosch UK page says it needs a descaling tablet in the tank and a cleaning tablet placed in the coffee grounds drawer, and takes about 26 minutes in total: roughly 19 minutes for the first cycle and 7 for the rinse. Bosch US lists Cleaning, Descaling and Calc'n Clean as three separate programmes on its countertop machines.
Our reading of these pages: descaling is about water, and cleaning is about coffee. A machine can need either. The display tells you which, and the Bosch pages say to follow it.
Daily and weekly care of a fully automatic machine
The Bosch pages we read are programme-driven. They give no daily checklist. What they do say is below, with our own suggestions labelled.
Milk drinks. Bosch UK's milk system page says the machine automatically steams the milk system after each milk drink, but that a thorough clean needs a rinse with water. It says to do that weekly or as needed.
Parts you can wash. The CTL7181B0 listing on ACE names the drip tray, milk container and water tank as dishwasher safe. Bosch UK says the opposite for a milk container on the machine its page covers, which we explain below. The two pages describe different machines, so follow your own manual.
Our suggestion, not a Bosch rule: empty the drip tray and the coffee grounds container when the display asks, and rinse the water tank when you refill it. Those are the quickest jobs on the machine.
Always unplug before taking parts out. Bosch UK's brew unit steps start with switching the machine off completely at the mains switch.
Rinsing the milk system
If your machine makes milk drinks, this is the cleaning job to do most often. Bosch UK warns that residue left in the machine "can turn rancid", causing sour smells and blockages and breeding bacteria. It also says to clean all parts of the milk system, including the piping to the outlet, and not only the container.
The rinse programme (Bosch UK)
The steps from the Bosch UK page for its fully automatic machines:
- Touch the rain drop icon.
- Touch "Rinse Milk System" to select the programme.
- Open the door and remove the suction pipe from the milk tube.
- Wipe the suction pipe, then insert its end into the hole on the coffee grounds container.
- Close the door carefully, because the page warns this prevents jamming the milk tube.
- Place an empty glass under the beverage outlet.
- Press the Play button.
- Wait while the milk system rinses with water.
- Empty the glass, then touch the rain drop icon again to exit the programme.
The milk container
Bosch UK says to clean the container regularly for hygiene, and to clean the stainless steel by hand with a gentle cloth and a detergent solution. It adds that only the individual elements of the lid are dishwasher safe, and that the container itself should not go in the dishwasher.
The conflict. ACE lists the CTL7181B0 milk container as dishwasher safe. Bosch UK says the container on its page is not. They are different machines, and we cannot say which rule covers yours. Our suggestion: hand-wash until your manual says otherwise. A hand wash does no harm to a part that could have gone in the dishwasher, while a dishwasher cycle can harm one that could not.
Signs the milk system needs attention
Bosch UK names sour smells and blockages. Our reading: a blockage that persists after a rinse is a repair and not a cleaning problem. We cover that below.
Cleaning the brew unit
Many fully automatic machines have a brew unit you can take out. Bosch UK says cleaning it regularly "is important" because it is not visible from outside, and gives no interval. Check your manual for the interval, and for whether your machine's unit is removable at all. The ACE listings we read do not say.
Taking it out and cleaning it (Bosch UK)
- Open the appliance door and switch the machine off completely at the mains switch.
- Remove the brewing unit's protective cover, then the coffee grounds container.
- Slide the red latch fully to the left.
- Push the eject lever fully down to release the brewing unit.
- Hold the unit by its recessed grips and carefully pull it out.
- Remove the brewing unit's cover and clean it thoroughly under running water.
- Clean the brewing unit's strainer thoroughly.
- Clean the connecting nozzles thoroughly.
- Wipe the inside of the appliance with a moist cloth to remove any coffee residue.
- Leave the appliance to dry.
Putting it back
- Put the cover back on the brewing unit.
- Push the unit fully into the appliance and press the middle until it clicks into place. The page says the red latch must be right over at the left before you refit it.
- Push the eject lever fully up, then slide the red latch fully to the right.
- Insert the coffee grounds container, replace the protective cover, and close the appliance door.
The two rules
No washing-up liquid. Bosch UK says: "Never clean your brewing unit with washing up liquid." The reason given is that it can strip the grease the unit needs to work.
No dishwasher. The page says the unit is not dishwasher safe and should be cleaned by hand.
The page adds that instructions may vary by model, and to check the manual or contact Bosch if unsure. We echo that. If the latch will not move or the unit will not seat, stop. Do not force it.
Descaling a fully automatic machine
This section has the steps. For when to descale in Dubai, how to check your water hardness, the water filter and the part numbers, see our descaling guide.
When
Bosch UK says to aim for about once a month. Two display messages are named on the page:
- "Descaling programme urgently required!" means descale immediately.
- "Descaling programme is overdue. Device will shortly be locked." means the machine will lock, and it can only be used again after descaling.
The page also says that failing to descale when required "may damage your appliance". Bosch US says the display alerts you when a cleaning and descaling programme is due, and warns that delaying "may affect the performance of your appliance and taste of your beverage."
What to use
Bosch UK names Bosch descaling tablets (a pack of six 18 g tablets, enough for three to six treatments, part 00312574) and Bosch liquid descaler (part 00312521). Its steps use a tablet and give no liquid steps. Bosch US lists tablet part numbers for its market: descaling tablets 00312530 and 00312422, and cleaning tablets 00312502, 00312423 and 00312503. Part numbers differ by market, so ask for the tablet your manual names.
The steps (Bosch UK, tablet)
The whole process takes about 21 minutes: about 19 for the descale and about 2 for the final rinse.
- Select the rain drop icon, then the Descale programme.
- Empty and replace the drip trays. Remove the water filter if one is fitted.
- Fill the empty tank with lukewarm water to the "0.5 l" mark and dissolve one descaling tablet in it.
- Remove the milk suction pipe, wipe it, and insert its end into the coffee grounds container hole.
- Close the door, place a container under the beverage outlet and start the programme.
- When it finishes, remove the container and start the programme again for the rinse.
- Rinse the tank, refit the filter if you removed it, and fill with fresh water to the "max" mark.
- Replace the tank, close the door, put the container back and start the rinse, about 2 minutes.
- Empty the drip trays, replace them, close the door, then exit with the rain drop icon.
Calc'n Clean (Bosch UK)
If your machine offers it, the page gives these steps. The programme runs about 26 minutes in all, and needs a container of at least 0.5 litres.
- Select the Calc'n Clean programme.
- Clean the beverage outlet and refit it. Empty the drip trays and refit them.
- Open the coffee grounds drawer, add a cleaning tablet, and close it.
- Remove the water filter if fitted.
- Fill the tank with lukewarm water to "0.5 l" and dissolve one Bosch descaling tablet in it.
- Detach the milk suction pipe, wipe it, and insert its end into the coffee grounds container hole.
- Close the door, place a 0.5 litre container under the outlet, and start. It runs about 19 minutes.
- Remove the container and start again. Rinse the tank, refit the filter, and fill to "max".
- Refit the tank, close the door, put the container back, and start. This rinse runs about 7 minutes.
- Empty the drip trays, refit them, close the door, and start the programme once more to finish.
- Press the droplet icon to exit.
The page says the machine suggests Calc'n Clean when both jobs are due, and that you should aim to descale roughly every one to two months. It names no models.
On Bosch US countertop machines
Bosch US describes the 300, 500 and 800 Series with different sequences. On the 300 Series, you press the Calc'n Clean button for 5 seconds, put a cleaning tablet in the right-side compartment of the brewing unit behind the red casing, dissolve a descaling tablet in warm water in the tank, and press Calc'n Clean again to continue. The 500 and 800 Series use the display, with the cleaning tablet going in the ground coffee compartment or the bean container slot. The US page gives container sizes of 33 and 34 oz and no durations. After any programme, it says to clean the brewing unit and the milk container or frother.
We do not reproduce every US step here, because they differ by series. If you have a US-market or imported machine, the US page and your manual are the guide.
A conflict worth knowing
Bosch South Africa's page on descaling says that Bosch recommends taking fully automatic machines to its central workshop for service rather than descaling them yourself. Bosch UK and Bosch US publish the steps for you to do it. We cannot reconcile the two, and they are different markets. Our suggestion: if your manual has a descale programme and you have the right tablets, the programme is designed for owners. If you are unsure of the product or the manual, ask us before you start.
Cleaning and descaling a Tassimo
This section comes from the Tassimo brand's own support pages, not from Bosch. They refer to "TASSIMO by BOSCH" descaling tablets. The cleaning page names no models and says the cycle "might differ per TASSIMO model". The descaling page lists Harmony, Finesse, Style, Happy, My Way and Suny. We found no Tassimo machine on Bosch UAE's category page or on ACE, so check your own manual.
Weekly quick clean
Wipe the machine after use with a soft cloth. Remove any spills, and clean the barcode reader in the head. The page puts this at 2 to 3 minutes.
Monthly rinse cycle
The page says to do this at least once a month, about 5 minutes. The steps:
- Unplug the machine. Remove all detachable parts, then wash and rinse them. The page does not say whether they are dishwasher safe.
- Clean the outside and head with a soft cloth.
- Fill the water tank to the maximum mark and remove the yellow service disc from the bottom or side of the machine.
- Open the head, place the service disc inside and close it. The page says the barcode on it "will tell your TASSIMO it's time for the cleaning cycle".
- Place a container under the coffee outlet and press start. Wait 2 to 3 minutes.
- When the status light stays on steadily, the cycle is done. Pour out the water and return the disc to its holder.
- Refill the tank before brewing again.
Descaling
The page says to descale about four times a year, or when the red descale light (a spray icon or "calc") comes on or flashes. A full cycle takes about 30 minutes. It uses two official tablets per cycle, dissolved in the tank. The steps:
- Fill the tank to the fill line, add two tablets and wait for them to dissolve.
- Remove the yellow service T DISC and place it barcode-side-down in the brewhead, where pods normally go.
- Return the full tank to the machine.
- Remove the cup stand and put an empty container of at least 500 ml under the outlet.
- Press and hold start/stop for 5 seconds. Descaling starts by itself and takes about 30 minutes. It is complete when the orange light comes on.
- Empty the used solution and put the container back.
- Rinse the tank, refill it to the fill line with fresh water and return it.
- Press start/stop briefly to run a cleaning cycle. Repeat the empty, refill and flush about three to four times to clear all the solution.
- Remove the T DISC and store it in the machine's storage compartment.
- Refill the tank with fresh, cool water. The machine is ready.
The warning
Both Tassimo pages warn: "Never use vinegar or acetic acid-based descalers because these can harm your machine and the taste of your drinks." The descaling page repeats it and adds that acid-based alternatives can damage the machine.
Two inconsistencies
The monthly page calls the disc the "Service Disc" or "Cleaning Disc", and the descaling page calls it the "Service T DISC". We assume they are the same yellow disc, but the pages do not say so. The cleaning page also sends you to a separate machine maintenance page for model-specific steps, which we did not read. So if your steps differ from the ones above, your manual wins.
Filter coffee makers
A filter coffee maker, such as the MyMoment TKA2M113GB listed on Bosch UAE, has the least Bosch guidance of the three.
What Bosch says. Bosch Ireland's page on descaling shows a filter machine and tells you to use "specialist descaling products which are tested and approved for your coffee machine", and to refer to the relevant section of the instruction manual for the steps. It lists no steps, frequency or rinse cycles. Bosch South Africa says that when a coffee maker stops pumping water, descaling is usually the fix, that you should use a special descaler made for the machine, and "Please don't use domestic cleaners", which it describes as mostly aggressive and harmful to the machine over time.
What Bosch does not say. We found no Bosch statement on vinegar for filter machines, no interval, and no steps. The Tassimo vinegar warning above is for Tassimo machines, and we do not extend it to filter makers. Our suggestion: use a product your manual names, and follow its steps.
If the machine stops pumping water. Bosch South Africa says descaling is usually the fix. It adds that if water runs out of the machine, a repair is usually needed and descaling will not help.
How often: the sources side by side
The pages do not agree, and they cover different machines.
| Source | Machine | Interval |
|---|---|---|
| Bosch UK, descaling | Fully automatic | About once a month. Immediately if the display says it is urgently required |
| Bosch UK, Calc'n Clean | Fully automatic | Roughly every one to two months |
| Bosch US | Countertop espresso | When the display alerts you |
| Tassimo site | Tassimo | About four times a year, or when the red light comes on. Rinse cycle monthly |
| Bosch UK, milk system | Fully automatic | Weekly or as needed |
| Bosch UK, brew unit | Fully automatic | Not stated |
| Bosch Ireland and South Africa | Filter | Not stated |
How to use this. Follow your machine's own prompt first. A machine that asks for a descale is telling you its own count. Use the table when the machine has no prompt, and our suggestion is the shorter interval for a machine you use every day.
Water hardness. None of the Bosch or Tassimo pages we read gives hardness guidance, and we do not state a Dubai figure. Our reading: the harder your water, the sooner scale builds, which is why a fixed interval is only a guide. Ask your building management for the supply's hardness, or use test strips.
What never to use
These are the warnings that appear on the pages above. Each applies to the machine type shown.
| Do not | Machine | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Wash the brew unit with washing-up liquid | Fully automatic | Bosch UK |
| Put the brew unit in the dishwasher | Fully automatic | Bosch UK |
| Put the milk container in the dishwasher | The machine on Bosch UK's page | Bosch UK. ACE lists the CTL7181B0 container as dishwasher safe, so check yours |
| Use vinegar or acetic acid descalers | Tassimo | Tassimo site |
| Use domestic cleaners | Coffee makers generally | Bosch South Africa |
| Leave a descale overdue | Fully automatic | Bosch UK. The machine locks, and delay may damage it |
| Close the door with the milk tube out of place | Fully automatic | Bosch UK, which warns it can jam the milk tube |
Two more cautions are ours and not Bosch's. Do not put a descaling tablet or cleaning tablet in the wrong place: the tank takes descaling tablets, and the ground coffee compartment or brew unit takes cleaning tablets, as the steps above show. And do not run a descale on a machine that is leaking. The programme pushes more water through the leak.
When it is not a cleaning problem
Cleaning and descaling fix scale, residue and smells. They do not fix a part that has failed. Here is how to tell.
Water runs out of the machine. Bosch South Africa says a repair is usually needed, and descaling will not help. Check the drip tray and the tank seat first. If the water is coming from underneath or from a seal, stop using the machine.
It will not pump water. Bosch South Africa says descaling is usually the fix. If a descale and a rinse do not restore the flow, the pump or a blocked path is the next suspect.
Weak or no coffee after a descale. Our repair data lists the usual causes as a pump or a clogged brew unit. Clean the brew unit by the Bosch UK steps first. If the coffee is still weak, book an inspection.
A loud or grating grinder. Cleaning the brew unit will not change the grinder. The usual causes are worn burrs or the motor, and that is a repair.
The display shows a fault that a descale does not clear. Our reading: a descale prompt is cleared by running the descale. A different message is not.
The milk system still blocks after a rinse. Per Bosch UK, residue causes blockages. If a rinse does not clear it, our reading is that the tube or a valve may be at fault.
A machine that has locked for an overdue descale. Bosch UK says it can only be used again after descaling. If you have the tablets and the programme will not start, tell us what the display shows.
What a coffee machine repair costs in Dubai
The AED 99 inspection includes the visit, the diagnosis and a written quote. If you approve the repair, the AED 99 comes off the price. If you decline, it is all you pay. The ranges below are our typical prices, excluding 5% VAT.
| Fault | Usual cause | Typical fix | Time on site | Price (AED) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leaking | Seals or water tank valve | Replace seals or valve | 45 to 75 min | 150 – 320 |
| No coffee | Pump or clogged brew unit | Descale, replace pump | 45 to 90 min | 180 – 460 |
| Grinder noise | Burrs or motor | Replace burrs or motor | 60 to 90 min | 260 – 560 |
A worked example: your machine makes little coffee and the technician finds scale in the path and a weak pump. The all-in price is AED 300, including the AED 99 inspection. VAT adds AED 15, so you pay AED 315. If you decline, you pay AED 99 plus AED 4.95 VAT, a total of AED 103.95.
Payment is by card, cash or bank transfer, and every visit gets a VAT invoice with the part numbers listed.
Repair or replace?
Our rule of thumb, which is ours and not a Bosch figure: if the repair costs more than about half of a comparable new machine, replace it.
The one UAE reference we have is the TIG20301 at AED 1,699 on ACE on 2 November 2026. Against it, a seal repair at AED 150 to 320 is 9% to 19%, a pump repair at up to AED 460 is about 27%, and a grinder repair at up to AED 560 is about 33%. All sit well under half. A CTL7181B0 at AED 10,799 makes a repair easier to justify. Prices and stock change, so confirm with the seller.
If your machine is within warranty, call Bosch first. The ACE page for the CTL7181B0 shows a "Free 3 Year Warranty" banner and says nothing more, so check your invoice. Our guide to authorised versus independent repair explains how to decide. If the warranty has ended, our 90-day warranty covers the repair we make.
What to tell us when you book
The more precise the booking, the more likely the first visit ends in a finished repair. Have these ready:
- The model code from the base or back of the machine, and whether it is fully automatic, a Tassimo or a filter maker. We confirm before the visit that we can repair that model.
- The symptom in your own words. "Water collects under the machine" is more useful than "it's broken".
- What the display says, and a photo of it.
- When you last descaled, and what product you used.
- What you have already tried. Say if you ran a descale, cleaned the brew unit or rinsed the milk system.
- Age and history.
- Access. Building name, apartment and parking.
A short video of the fault, such as a leak or a grinder noise, helps. Send it by WhatsApp.
Frequently asked questions
How do I clean a Bosch coffee machine?
It depends on the type. For a fully automatic machine, use the display programmes: Rinse Milk System, Descale or Calc'n Clean, and wash the brew unit by hand. For a Tassimo, use the service disc monthly. For a filter maker, use a tested descaler and your manual.
How often should I descale a Bosch coffee machine?
Bosch UK says about once a month for its fully automatic machines, and Calc'n Clean roughly every one to two months. The Tassimo site says about four times a year. Follow your machine's own prompt first.
How do I clean a Bosch Tassimo?
Wipe it weekly, run a monthly rinse with the yellow service disc, and descale about four times a year with two Tassimo tablets. The Tassimo site says never to use vinegar. Those pages are the Tassimo brand's, not Bosch's.
Can I use vinegar to descale my Bosch coffee machine?
The Tassimo site warns against it. The Bosch pages we read for fully automatic machines do not mention vinegar, and Bosch South Africa warns against domestic cleaners for coffee makers. Use the descaler your manual names.
Can I put the brew unit in the dishwasher?
No. Bosch UK says it is not dishwasher safe and must not be cleaned with washing-up liquid. Wash it by hand under running water.
What is Calc'n Clean?
A programme that descales and cleans in one run. Bosch UK says it takes about 26 minutes and needs a descaling tablet in the tank and a cleaning tablet in the coffee grounds drawer.
Why is my Bosch coffee machine locked?
Bosch UK says a machine that is overdue for descaling will lock and can only be used again after descaling. If the programme will not start, tell us what the display shows.
Why does my Bosch coffee maker not pump water?
Bosch South Africa says descaling is usually the fix. If water runs out of the machine, it says a repair is usually needed. If a descale does not restore the flow, book an inspection.
Will cleaning or repairing it affect my warranty?
Cleaning and descaling are steps Bosch's own pages describe for owners. A repair depends on your warranty terms, and we cannot read them for you. If your machine is still in warranty, call Bosch first.
