Bosch Washing Machine Drum Bearing Replacement Dubai

What Bosch's noise pages say to check first, what Bosch US says about drum bearings, what else sounds similar, repair or replace, and what it costs in Dubai.

A technician in a bright blue cap and T-shirt kneels in front of a washing machine with its detergent drawer pulled out and its door open, inspecting the controls and drum opening.

Bosch Washing Machine Drum Bearing Replacement in Dubai: Noise, What to Rule Out First, Repair or Replace, and Cost

Bosch's own noise pages for the UAE, the UK, Singapore and Egypt never mention bearings. They list the same few causes: transit bolts still fitted, a machine that is not level, an unsuitable floor, an unbalanced load, and an object in the drum or the pump. Only the Bosch US page names the part, saying a loud grinding or knocking that continues "may point to worn drum bearings or suspension problems".

That gap matters, because a drum bearing replacement is one of the larger washing machine bills, and the free causes are easy to miss. This page sets out what Bosch says to check first, what Bosch US says about bearings, how a bearing fault is described by a third-party repair site (labelled as one), what else makes a similar noise, what the job involves, and what it costs in Dubai. It also covers the decision most owners face once they have a quote: repair the machine or replace it.

We repair Bosch appliances. We are an independent company and not an authorised Bosch agent. If your washing machine is inside Bosch's warranty, call Bosch first. For other faults and prices see our Bosch washing machine repair page.

At a glance

  • What Bosch says to check first: transit bolts at the back, the machine level on all four feet, the floor, the load, and objects in the drum or the drain pump. (Bosch UAE, UK, Singapore and Egypt.)
  • Where bearings appear on a Bosch page: the Bosch US noise page. Loud grinding or knocking that continues may point to "worn drum bearings or suspension problems", and a spin noise may point to a drive motor or drive pulley.
  • Transit bolts: Bosch UAE says to remove them "immediately" if they are still fitted.
  • The floor: Bosch UK says wooden floors are "particularly unsuitable".
  • A bearing fault is not found by sound alone. A technician confirms it with the drum, and other parts make a similar noise.
  • A repair in Dubai: typically AED 380 to 780 before 5% VAT, usually 2 to 4 hours, with a 90-day warranty on our repairs.

What Bosch's pages say about washing machine noise

We read the noise or vibration pages on five Bosch sites: the UAE, the UK, Singapore, Egypt and the US. They agree on the main points and differ on the rest.

Bosch site Noise types listed Causes listed When it says to get help
UAE Squealing, screeching, banging, knocking, bumping, scratching, rumbling Transit bolts, uneven levelling, unbalanced load, foreign objects, a poor floor If the problem persists, a Bosch service expert. The page gives BSH 048030400
UK The same seven Unsuitable surface, transit bolts, an unbalanced machine The steps can resolve noises "without the need for a Bosch engineer". Loud noises "need to be solved promptly"
Singapore Not listed Unsuitable surface, transit bolts, an unbalanced machine "We advise against attempting repairs yourself". Book a Bosch engineer
Egypt The same seven Transit bolts, uneven machine, unbalanced load, foreign objects, floor If it persists, a Bosch service expert
US Banging, clicking, knocking Unbalanced load, installation alignment, an unstable floor Noise that continues after those steps, loud grinding or knocking, spin noises, error codes

What the table shows

The UAE, UK, Singapore and Egypt pages stop at the same short list of causes. The US page adds the load first, which the Singapore page does not mention, and it adds the call-a-technician list that names bearings. A bearing is never offered to the owner as a thing to check.

The UK page says low-level noise during a wash is normal for all washing machines. Bosch US says a washing machine makes "a gentle rattle or swooshing sound" when it runs properly. Our reading is that a new, louder or changed noise is the signal, not the existence of noise.

What the pages do not say

  • How long a bearing lasts.
  • What a worn bearing sounds like.
  • Whether a bearing repair is covered by a warranty.
  • Whether a bearing is replaced alone or with other parts.

Those questions are left to the engineer. We say where we can, and mark it as ours.

Rule out the free causes first

Every Bosch page above starts with causes that cost nothing. They are worth doing properly before you pay for a diagnosis, because Bosch's UK page says they can resolve the noise without an engineer.

1. The transit bolts

Bosch UAE says: check the back of the machine, and if the transit bolts are still there, remove them and fit the blanks supplied with the machine. Bosch UK says the same and refers to the installation instructions and a video. Bosch UAE says to remove them "immediately" if they are still installed.

The Bosch Egypt page gives the practical details. The transit bolts come out with a WAF 13 wrench, which means four screws and four sleeves, and four cover caps are pressed in afterwards. Bosch UAE says to keep the bolts, screws and sleeves for future transport.

If your machine has been moved or installed recently, this is the first check. If it has run for years, the bolts are very unlikely to be your problem, but a look takes a minute.

2. The level

Bosch UK and Singapore say an unbalanced machine can cause "loud thumping or knocking sounds", and the UK page adds "especially when operating at high speeds". The UAE and Egypt pages say the same about thumping or knocking at high spin speeds. The fix is the same on each: put a spirit level on the machine, turn the feet until it reads level, then lock the feet with the lock nuts.

The Egypt page gives the tool, a WAF 17 wrench for the lock nuts, and two cautions. Tighten each lock nut against the housing while holding the foot still, and do not adjust a foot's height while you are tightening its nut. If the machine stands on a base, the UK page says to secure the feet with clip holders, which are sold as an accessory.

3. The floor

Bosch UK says wooden floors are "particularly unsuitable" and recommends a hard surface in a room corner. If that is not possible, it says to fix a water-resistant wooden board of at least 30 mm under the machine. The Singapore page says the same, and the US page says to screw it to the floor joists.

We do not know what your floor is made of. If the machine sits on a raised platform, a timber frame or uneven tile, the floor is part of the diagnosis.

4. The load

Bosch US says an unbalanced load is the most common cause of banging, clicking or knocking. Towels and bedding bunch on one side. The fix is to pause the cycle, spread the items out, leave some space at the top of the drum, and restart the spin. Bosch UAE and Egypt say to avoid overfilling the drum and to spread heavy items.

Our 10 kg guide makes a related point: a larger drum is easier to overfill, and the bearings and shock absorbers carry the weight on every spin. That is ours, and not a Bosch figure.

5. Objects in the drum or the pump

Bosch UAE and Egypt say a rattle can mean an object in the drum or the drain pump, and to check both. Our services page mentions coins and underwire in jacket pockets. If the noise is a light rattle and not a rumble, check the pockets and the drum first. Our pump filter guide covers the filter.

After the five checks

If the noise stops, you have saved a visit. If it continues, Bosch UAE says to contact a Bosch service expert and Bosch US says to call a technician. That is the point at which a bearing becomes a reasonable suspect, and not before.

What Bosch US says about bearings

The Bosch US noise page is the only Bosch page we found that names the part. It lists four situations for calling a technician:

  • Noise that continues after you have rebalanced the load, checked the alignment, and confirmed the machine is level.
  • Loud grinding or knocking, which "may point to worn drum bearings or suspension problems".
  • Unusual noises during the spin cycle, which "may indicate a faulty drive motor or worn drive pulley".
  • Error codes or electrical issues.

What to take from it

Three points. First, Bosch US says "may" in both cases. It does not say that grinding means bearings. Second, it puts bearings, suspension, the drive motor and the pulley together as a short list of things a technician sorts out. Third, it does not say how long bearings last, how they fail or what the repair costs.

The page does not name shock absorbers specifically, and it uses the word "suspension". We use the same word and do not claim a particular part.

The error code case

Bosch US lists error codes with the noise symptoms. If your machine shows a code, the code page is more useful than the noise page. For a drum that will not spin, see our F21 guide, which sets out that Bosch's pages do not list F21 and what other sources say about it.

How worn bearings are described, from a third-party source

Bosch's pages give no description of bearing noise, so we looked outside. This section is from one UK repair site, White Goods Help, and we label it as a third party. It is not a Bosch statement and not an instruction.

What the site says

  • Worn drum bearings "typically produce a deep, rumbling sound", described as a deep, gravelly rumble, like a failing wheel bearing on a car. It is most noticeable during the spin.
  • A play test: grip the front lip of the drum and try to move it up and down. Significant movement suggests the front bearing has collapsed, or that the drum spider has cracked or corroded.
  • A spin-by-hand test with the drive belt removed. A rumble then points to the bearings. A smooth, quiet spin means the noise comes from elsewhere.
  • With significant play, it says the repair is likely to be a major one, and that if the drum moves freely the repair will need more than new bearings. It suggests a bearing job can be worthwhile when the spider is intact and the machine is relatively young, and recommends a professional assessment first.

What we take from it, and what we do not

The description matches what we hear from owners, and it fits the way we described the symptoms on our washing machine page. It is not a test for you to run. The belt-off test involves opening the machine, which Bosch's pages tell you not to do, and the site is describing a repairer's method.

We do not take any prices from the site. Our own figures are in the cost section.

What you can safely check, and what to leave

Bosch's pages give the owner the five free checks. These are the additions we are comfortable with, and they are ours.

A hand check with the door open

Unplug the machine. With the door open, take hold of the drum through the opening and push it gently up and down and side to side. Some movement is normal. A drum that knocks, clunks or moves a lot at the front lip is worth telling a technician about. We cannot give you a threshold, and Bosch's pages give none.

If you do this, keep your hands clear of the door seal's edge, take care with a drum that may rotate, and do not lean on the open door. Bosch's manuals warn the door can become very hot, so only do it on a machine that has been off for a while.

A note about what you hear

Write down when the noise starts and what it does. It helps a technician more than a guess about the part.

  • Does it start with the spin or from the first rotation?
  • Does it rise with the spin speed?
  • Is it there on an empty drum?
  • Is it there on a short cold programme?
  • Is it a rumble, a squeal, a knock or a scrape?

What to leave

  • The belt, the back panel and the top panel. The third-party belt-off test is a repairer's step.
  • The drum pulley, the motor and the suspension. Bosch US lists them as things a technician decides.
  • Running the machine on a loud spin to see if it gets worse. Bosch UK says loud noises "need to be solved promptly". Do not run extra spins to test.
  • Moving the machine alone. It is heavy. Our 10 kg guide gives the weight of a 10 kg machine as about 75 kg, and two people should move it.

If the machine smells hot, throws water or trips the house electrics, switch off at the wall and book.

Look-alikes: what else makes a bearing noise

A rumble from the machine does not prove a bearing. These are the other items that the sources name, and the claims we can attribute.

What it could be Who names it What we can say
Transit bolts still fitted Bosch UAE, UK, Egypt Rule out first
An unlevel machine Bosch UAE, UK, Singapore, Egypt, US Rule out second
An unbalanced load Bosch UAE, Egypt, US Redistribute and respin
An object in the drum or the pump Bosch UAE, Egypt Check the drum and the filter
A poor floor Bosch UAE, UK, Singapore, Egypt, US Check what the machine stands on
Suspension Bosch US A technician decides
Drive motor or drive pulley Bosch US A technician decides, for spin noises
A motor bearing White Goods Help Described as almost identical to a drum bearing when the drum is spun with the belt on
The drive belt White Goods Help Described as capable of the same rumble, in one case where the rubber had begun to melt

Why this matters for the quote

A technician has to separate a drum bearing from a motor bearing from a belt, and the labour and the part differ. The quote should say which was found. We name the part on the quote, and the part number appears on the invoice. We do not ask you to approve a bearing on the strength of a noise.

The two looks-like-bearing faults owners ask about

  • A spin that stops early. Bosch US names an unbalanced load first. For a drum that will not turn at all, see our F21 guide. It is a different problem from a bearing.
  • A leak and a noise together. If water is at the front or the bottom, a door seal or the pump housing may be the cause of the wet, and the noise a separate question. See our door seal guide and drain pump guide.

A noise log that helps the technician

Bosch's pages say nothing about how to describe a noise. A few lines written down before the visit give a technician more than "it sounds bad". The readings in the right-hand column are ours. They tell you what to report and what to rule out, and none of them is a diagnosis.

What you notice What to rule out first What to tell us
Noise only on the spin, rising with speed The level, the load, the floor The spin speed you set, and whether the noise is steady or rhythmic
Noise from the first turn of the drum Transit bolts on a new or moved machine, objects in the drum Whether the machine has been moved or installed recently
Noise on an empty drum Bolts, level, floor That the noise continues with no load
Noise on a short cold programme as well Bolts, level, floor The programme and how long it runs before the noise starts
A rattle that comes and goes Objects in the drum or the pump (Bosch UAE, Egypt) Whether pockets, the filter and the drum are clear
A knock or thump on the spin only with towels or bedding The load (Bosch US) The load and the weight it carries
Walking across the floor on the spin The level and the floor (Bosch UK) Whether the feet are locked and the floor type
Any noise with a code on the display The code page The code and when it appeared

How to record it

A short phone recording of the spin, taken from a metre away, is usually enough. Note the date, the programme, the temperature and the spin speed on the same message. If the noise changes from week to week, record it again before the visit.

If you have just moved the machine, or moved flat

A move is when most of Bosch's noise causes appear. This checklist follows Bosch's pages and stays on what the owner can do.

  1. Transit bolts. Bosch UAE says to remove them immediately if they are fitted, and to keep the bolts, screws and sleeves for the next move. If you are moving out, they should go back in before transport. The Egypt page describes the WAF 13 wrench and the four cover caps.
  2. The level. Level the machine on all four feet with a spirit level, then lock the feet with the lock nuts, using a WAF 17 wrench as the Egypt page describes.
  3. The floor. Bosch UK says to use a hard surface in a room corner. A water-resistant board at least 30 mm thick is its fallback for a wooden floor.
  4. The base, if any. Bosch UK says the clip holders for a base are an accessory.
  5. The first run. Run an ordinary load and listen. If a new noise appears, go back to step 1 before you book.

If the machine is built in

Level and bolts matter just as much on a built-in machine, and a cabinet can make the feet harder to reach. Tell us at booking if the machine is under a worktop, because it takes longer to pull out and refit, and our quotes reflect that.

Questions to ask before you approve a bearing quote

These apply to us as much as to any other repairer.

  1. What was found? A named part and a named fault, such as "front drum bearing", are a good sign. "Drum problem" is not enough.
  2. How was it confirmed? The technician should describe a test, such as movement of the drum.
  3. Were the free causes ruled out? Transit bolts, level and floor.
  4. Were the motor, the belt and the suspension checked? Bosch US lists drive motor, pulley and suspension beside the bearings.
  5. What does the price include? The bearings, the seal if it is replaced, labour and disposal.
  6. What if the drum is damaged? The price may change, so ask what happens and who tells you.
  7. How long is the wait for the part, and is the price the same?
  8. What is the warranty? Ours is 90 days on the part and labour for the repaired fault.
  9. What do you pay if you decline? It should be a number.
  10. Is VAT a separate line? Ours is 5%.

A quote that cannot answer the first three questions needs a second opinion.

If the problem is Go to
Water at the door, or a damaged rubber seal Door seal replacement
Water left in the drum or a slow drain Pump filter guide and E18
The drum will not turn, or a motor code F21
No heat E19
Detergent or powder in the drawer Detergent guide
The machine will not start Reset guide
All other faults and prices Washing machine repair

How urgent is the noise?

Bosch UK says loud noises "need to be solved promptly" and gives no instruction to stop using the machine. Beyond that, Bosch's pages do not grade urgency. These lines are ours.

What you notice Our advice
A burning smell, smoke, or the house electrics trip Switch off at the wall and book at once
Water on the floor with the noise Stop, close the tap and book. A leak is a separate fault
The drum jams or will not turn Stop and book. See our F21 guide
A loud grinding or knocking that is getting worse from wash to wash Book soon, and avoid high-speed spins until it is checked
A new noise on a machine that has just been moved or installed Go through the free checks first
A mild change in sound with no other sign Go through the free checks and book if it stays

We are not saying a noisy machine is unsafe. We are saying that a noise that grows is information, and that Bosch US puts "loud grinding or knocking" on its call-a-technician list.

The rating plate: what to photograph

Bosch Singapore says to find the E-Nr and the FD number on the rating plate when you book a repair, and its page describes the E-Nr as the model number and the FD as the production number. Photograph the plate before the visit.

Why the plate matters for a bearing job

  • The E-Nr tells us which parts apply. Our washing machine pages explain that two machines in the same series can differ inside, so a part is matched to the E-Nr and not to the series name. Our model code guide explains how to read it.
  • The age helps the repair-or-replace sum. An older machine with a bearing fault is the case where the second bill is most likely, as our examples above show.
  • A record helps if the fault returns. Keep the photo with your invoice.

If the plate is hidden behind a built-in cabinet door or against a wall, tell us. We may need to pull the machine forward to read it, and we say so at booking.

What the repair involves

Bosch's pages do not describe how a bearing is replaced, and neither do we in instruction form. This section is our own account of what the job involves, so you understand the quote. It is not a guide to doing it.

The machine comes out

A bearing sits at the heart of the drum assembly, and the machine has to be pulled out, disconnected and opened. A technician works on it where there is room and light. Our services page notes that bearings and motors are among the most expensive washing machine repairs and that the tub often has to come apart.

Why it takes 2 to 4 hours

The time is the labour, not the part. Taking a machine this far down and putting it back, testing it, and cleaning up is a long visit by the standards of a seal or a pump. Our services page gives 2 to 4 hours for a noisy drum, against 60 to 120 minutes for a not-spinning fault.

What the quote should list

  • The bearings, and whether a seal or other wear parts go with them.
  • Whether the drum assembly or the tub is in good condition.
  • Whether the suspension, the belt and the motor were checked.
  • The price, the time on site and the warranty.

Whether we replace the drum seal with the bearings or only the bearing set is stated on each quote. Ask for it before you approve.

A note on the machine's weight

A washing machine is heavy and the drum is heavier than it looks. We use two people when we move one. If your machine is built in under a worktop, tell us at booking so we allow for a longer visit.

What it costs

The AED 99 inspection includes the visit, the diagnosis and a written quote. If you approve the repair, the AED 99 comes off the repair price. If you decline, it is all you pay.

Typical costs, excluding 5% VAT

Fault What is done Time on site Price (AED)
Noisy drum Replace bearings or dampers 2 to 4 hours 380 – 780
Not spinning Replace the failed part (motor wiring, imbalance sensor, bearings) 60 to 120 min 220 – 520

Our washing machine page gives AED 220 to 520 for spin faults and up to AED 780 for bearings.

What moves the quote

Three things. The parts: a bearing set costs differently from a damper, and the quote names which. Access: a built-in machine behind a cabinet panel takes longer to pull out and refit. And stock: model-specific parts are ordered once the fault is confirmed, and if the part is not on the van the price is unchanged but you wait for a second visit. We tell you the lead time before you approve.

A worked example

A technician confirms worn bearings on a freestanding machine. The all-in price is AED 680, with the AED 99 inspection included. VAT adds AED 34, so you pay AED 714. If you decline the quote, you pay AED 99 plus AED 4.95 VAT, a total of AED 103.95.

The warranty

Every repair carries a 90-day warranty on the parts fitted and the labour for the repaired fault. If the same fault returns inside 90 days, we come back at no charge. The part number is listed on your invoice.

Repair or replace the machine

A bearing quote is the one that most often raises the question. Compare the written quote with a current price for a comparable new machine, since prices change. A workable rule, and it is ours and not Bosch's: if the repair costs less than about half of a new equivalent and the machine is under about ten years old, repair it.

Our washing machine page works examples with assumed new-machine prices, so check current prices before you decide:

Machine Quote Share of new price Our reading
Nine-year-old Serie 4, worn drum bearings AED 680 against about AED 2,200 new 31% Bearing work signals general wear. Repair if the rest is sound and the seal and pump are good. Replace if the seal is split or the pump is noisy
Six-year-old 10 kg, worn bearings AED 780 About 15% Routine work on a sound machine. Repair if the drum, seal and module are good
Eleven-year-old machine with failing bearings and a weak motor AED 1,100 against about AED 2,200 new 50% Two serious faults on an old machine. Replace
Ten-year-old Serie 4 with worn bearings and a failing door lock AED 1,100 61% of the new price assumed in our 9 kg guide Replace

Three questions to settle it

  1. How old is the machine? Under about ten years favours repair.
  2. What else is wearing? The door seal, the pump and the module all matter, because bearing wear often arrives with other wear.
  3. Is the drum itself sound? The third-party source says a drum with play from a collapsed bearing or a damaged spider is a bigger job. We tell you what we find on the quote.

If you replace the machine

Before the new machine arrives, note the floor and levelling points above. Bosch UK says the floor can cause vibration, and Bosch UAE says to remove the transit bolts if they are still fitted.

Avoiding a repeat

Bosch's pages give a short list, and our experience adds a little.

  • Remove the transit bolts when you install, and keep them for any move. (Bosch UAE.)
  • Level the machine and lock the feet. (Bosch UAE, UK, Singapore, Egypt.)
  • Use a hard floor, in a corner if possible. (Bosch UK.)
  • Spread heavy items and do not overfill the drum. (Bosch UAE, Egypt, US.)
  • Check pockets before a wash. Ours.
  • Do not ignore a new noise. Bosch UK says loud noises "need to be solved promptly". We say the same.
  • Re-check the level after the machine has been moved. Ours.

Heavy loads and larger drums

A larger drum is easier to overfill. Our 10 kg and 9 kg guides make the same point about weight on the bearings and shock absorbers. Bosch US says an unbalanced load can hurt performance over time and not only create noise.

What to tell us

  • The model code from the rating plate, as a photo.
  • The sound: a rumble, a squeal, a knock or a scrape, and a short recording if you can make one.
  • When it happens: at the start of the spin, rising with speed, or the whole cycle.
  • What you have ruled out: the transit bolts, the level, the floor, the load, the pockets.
  • The age of the machine, and any earlier repairs.
  • Any code on the display.
  • Any leak at the door or the base.
  • Access: freestanding or built in, the floor, your building's access rules and parking.

Frequently asked questions

What does Bosch say about drum bearings?

Bosch's UAE, UK, Singapore and Egypt noise pages do not mention bearings. Bosch US says loud grinding or knocking "may point to worn drum bearings or suspension problems".

What should I check before paying for a bearing repair?

Bosch's pages list the transit bolts, the level of the machine on all four feet, the floor, the load, and objects in the drum or the pump.

Do transit bolts really cause a noise?

Bosch UAE says to remove them "immediately" if they are still fitted, and to fit the blanks supplied. Bosch UK says the same and points to the installation instructions.

How do I know it is the bearings?

Sound alone does not prove it. A third-party repair site describes a deep rumble that rises with the spin, and says a worn motor bearing or a belt can sound the same. A technician confirms it with the drum.

Can I fix a bearing myself?

Bosch Singapore says to book an engineer rather than repair it yourself, and the job means opening the machine and the tub. We do not recommend it.

Why does a bearing repair take 2 to 4 hours?

The machine has to be taken a long way apart. That is our account of the labour, and not a Bosch figure.

How much does it cost in Dubai?

Typically AED 380 to 780 before 5% VAT, with the AED 99 inspection credited if you approve. The written quote gives the exact figure.

Is it worth repairing an old machine?

A workable rule is that a repair under about half of a new equivalent, on a machine under about ten years old, is worth doing. Two serious faults on an old machine tip it the other way.

Can I keep using the machine until the visit?

Bosch UK says loud noises need solving promptly and gives no instruction to stop using the machine. We would avoid loud high-speed spins until it is checked.

Will a bearing repair stop the noise?

If a bearing is the cause, a correct replacement should. If the noise came from the level, the floor or a load, it will continue, which is why we rule those out first.

My machine is under warranty. Should I still message you?

Contact Bosch first. We are an independent repair company and not an authorised Bosch agent, and a repair by us may not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty terms.
