Bosch Washing Machine Carbon Brushes and Motor Repair in Dubai: Does Your Machine Have Brushes, Not Spinning, and Cost

Search for "Bosch washing machine carbon brush replacement" and you may be asking about a part your machine does not have. Bosch's Australian and Hong Kong pages describe the EcoSilence Drive motor as one that works without carbon brushes. The Australian page says that instead of supplying electricity to the armature "via carbon brushes", Bosch equipped the armature with extremely strong permanent magnets. If your washer has that motor, a worn brush is not what stopped it spinning.

Carbon brushes are a real part on older motors, and our washing machine page lists "worn motor brushes (older models)" among the causes of a machine that will not spin. The difficulty is knowing which kind you own. The series number does not say, the motor is behind the panels, and Bosch's own pages use two names, EcoSilence Drive and SilentPowerDrive, without saying whether they are the same thing.

This page helps you sort that out. It explains how to tell whether brushes apply to your machine, sets out what Bosch's Singapore, Kuwait and US spin pages say, which is mostly about the pump and the drain hose, covers the free checks, and says which parts a technician looks at when a machine will not spin. It ends with the cost of the repair in Dubai.

We repair Bosch appliances. We are an independent company and not an authorised Bosch agent. If your washing machine is inside Bosch's warranty, call Bosch first. For other faults and prices see our Bosch washing machine repair page.

At a glance

  • Bosch advertises a motor without carbon brushes. Bosch Australia says the EcoSilence Drive armature carries permanent magnets and is not supplied "via carbon brushes". Bosch Hong Kong's Serie 6 page says it works "without using carbon brushes like traditional motors".
  • Older motors do use brushes. Our washing machine page lists worn motor brushes among the causes of a machine that will not spin, on older models.
  • The series number does not tell you which motor you have. Bosch's pages use both EcoSilence Drive and SilentPowerDrive, and we cannot tell from them whether those are the same motor.
  • Bosch's spin pages stop at the pump and the hose. Bosch Singapore and Kuwait name a blocked pump or a kinked or blocked drain hose. Bosch US adds an unbalanced load, which it calls "one of the most common causes".
  • Motor, belt and control board appear only as bare possibilities, on the Bosch US page, with no steps.
  • A new machine's motor has a 10-year warranty on some models. Bosch Australia and Hong Kong mention it. We did not read the terms.
  • A not-spinning repair in Dubai: typically AED 220 to 520 before 5% VAT, with a 90-day warranty on our repairs.

What Bosch says

Bosch Australia's page on the EcoSilence Drive describes it as "Bosch's most powerful motor to date". It contrasts it with a brushed design: "Instead of supplying electricity to the rotating armature via carbon brushes", Bosch equipped the armature with extremely strong permanent magnets. The page offers a 10-year motor warranty on models that feature the motor, under terms in a linked document that we did not read. The page never uses the word "brushless".

Bosch Hong Kong's page for a Serie 6 front loader describes an "EcoSilence Drive friction-free motor" that works "without using carbon brushes like traditional motors", with a 10-year warranty. That page also lists SilentPowerDrive as a feature, and it too never says "brushless".

The two names

Our own model pages meet the same naming issue. Bosch's series page gives the Serie 4 an EcoSilence Drive motor, while Bosch's UAE product page for an 8 kg Serie 4 lists "SilentPowerDrive". We cannot tell from those pages whether the names are different motors or different labels for similar ones. Our Serie 2 guide notes that Bosch Egypt lists a brushless BLDC motor for a Serie 2 model. We treat each as evidence for that model only.

What we do not know

We do not know which models in your range carry which motor. Bosch's pages do not list a motor type for every model, and we will not guess from the series number. The E-Nr and the technician decide.

Why this changes the diagnosis

On a machine with no brushes, our Serie 4 guide says the motor faults to expect are in the wiring, the motor's control electronics or the bearings that carry the drum. On an older machine with a brushed motor, the brushes are among the suspects. Both are our reading of what the motor design implies, and Bosch's pages do not go into it.

Where to look for the motor name

You can often find out without opening the machine. These routes are ours.

  1. The Bosch product page for your E-Nr. The features list on the pages we read names the motor, for example "EcoSilence Drive" or "SilentPowerDrive". Enter the E-Nr from the rating plate.
  2. The manual, if you have it. Bosch's pages say to check it for details of your model.
  3. A retailer listing, with care. Our model guides found retailer pages that disagree with Bosch's own on features, so treat a listing as a lead and not as proof.
  4. A technician. The inspection confirms the motor type from the machine itself.

What the name does and does not tell you

A page that lists EcoSilence Drive is describing the motor Bosch Australia says works without carbon brushes. A page that lists SilentPowerDrive tells you the name and no more, because we cannot say whether it is the same design. A page that lists no motor tells you nothing, and the E-Nr is then the route to a confirmed answer.

What a carbon brush is

A carbon brush is a small block of carbon that presses against a spinning part of a brushed motor and carries electricity to it. It wears as the motor runs. When it wears down, the motor can lose power or stop. That is our plain description and not a Bosch one, because the Bosch pages we read describe what the newer motor does without brushes and not how a brushed motor wears.

What the Bosch wording tells us

Bosch Australia's sentence is the clearest statement on this: the armature is not supplied "via carbon brushes" on the EcoSilence Drive. That tells us brushes belong to the older design Bosch is contrasting it with. It does not tell us which Bosch models used the older design, or when.

What it does not tell us

How long brushes last, how many machines still have them, and what a worn brush looks like to an owner. No Bosch page we read gives any of that, and we do not quote a lifespan.

What you can see from outside

Nothing. The motor is inside the machine, and a brush cannot be inspected without removing parts. Our washing machine page lists bearings and motors among the most expensive washing machine repairs, where the tub often has to come apart. That is why we start with the free checks.

What Bosch says when a washing machine will not spin

We read the "washing machine not spinning" pages on three Bosch sites: Singapore, Kuwait and the US. We could not read the Bosch UAE version, because it was not available to us. The table sets out what each says.

Bosch site Causes it names Steps it gives Motor, belt or board If it continues
Singapore A blocked pump, or a kinked hose Unplug, drain through the service flap, clear the pump so the impeller turns, refit, check for leaks with a litre of water in the drawer, run a pump or drain cycle. Check the drain hose for kinks, clean the hose and siphon connector, run Drain Not mentioned A service engineer "might solve the issue". Bosch Singapore's number is given
Kuwait A pump blockage, or a blocked or kinked waste water hose The same pump and hose steps Not mentioned A service engineer. Online booking, a repair hotline and a feedback form
US Clothing under the agitator, a blocked drain hose, a blocked pump, an unbalanced load Free the clothing, clean the hose and siphon, clean the pump, rearrange the load and spin again "A damaged motor", "a worn-out drive belt" and "a malfunctioning control board" appear only as possible causes. Brushes are not mentioned A Bosch technician. A phone number and a "Find a Servicer" option

The causes agree on the pump and the hose

All three pages name the pump and the drain hose. Singapore and Kuwait give nearly the same steps, which end with running a Drain programme and checking the joint is watertight.

Where the US page differs

The US page is the only one that names an unbalanced load, and it calls it "one of the most common causes". It is also the only one that names the motor, the belt and the control board, though only as possibilities with no steps. It warns that water leaking from the hose may be very hot, with a risk of scalding. We keep the warning in our checks below.

What none of them gives

  • A way to tell a motor fault from a pump fault.
  • Any step for brushes. The US page does not mention them at all.
  • A price.
  • Anything about how the motor works in your model.

The checks that cost nothing

These steps come from Bosch's pages and our washing machine page. Ours are marked.

  1. Switch off and unplug the machine. Every Bosch page starts here.
  2. Look for a load problem. Bosch US calls an unbalanced load one of the most common causes. Wash large and small items together, close zips, buttons and duvet-cover fastenings, rearrange the wet laundry and run the spin again.
  3. Check for a new machine's transport bolts. Our washing machine page says that on a machine just installed or moved, you check the back for the four long bolts that lock the drum for shipping. Bosch UAE says to remove them immediately if they are still fitted.
  4. Check the feet and the lock nuts. Our washing machine page says all four feet must be level and the lock nuts tight.
  5. Check the drum for coins and underwire. Our washing machine page says these rattle and jam.
  6. Check the drain hose for kinks. Bosch Singapore, Kuwait and US.
  7. Clean the pump. Bosch Singapore and Kuwait: drain through the service flap, clear the pump, refit the cover firmly. Our drain pump guide covers the part, and our filter guide covers the steps.
  8. Run the Drain programme and check the joints are watertight. Bosch Singapore, Kuwait and US.
  9. Reset once, if you wish. Our washing machine page says not to keep restarting a machine that stops on the same code, because each restart adds wear to a failing part.
  10. Stop and book if the drum still will not spin.

A caution about hot water

Bosch US warns that water leaking from the hose may be very hot, with a risk of scalding. Let the machine cool, and keep a bucket and a cloth to hand.

What the checks can and cannot show

If one of them fixes the spin, the cause was the load, the drain or the transport bolts, and you need no part. If none does, the cause is inside the machine, and Bosch's pages say to call a service engineer.

Signs that point at the motor

The Bosch pages do not describe the signs of a motor fault. This section is ours, from our washing machine page, and we keep it short.

What you notice What our page says it can point to
The drum will not spin, or the machine stops mid-spin, on an older model with a brushed motor Worn carbon brushes. Our washing machine page lists them for older models
The same fault on a machine with EcoSilence Drive Motor wiring, the control module or the bearings, since there are no brushes to wear
A rumble that grows louder as the drum speeds up Bearings. Bosch US says loud grinding or knocking that continues may point to worn drum bearings or suspension. See our bearing guide
F21 on the display Repair sites report it as a motor fault. Bosch's error pages that we read do not list it. See our F21 guide
The machine fills and washes, then stops at the spin An imbalance sensor, a belt or a motor fault. Our "Not spinning" row lists the imbalance sensor, the belt and the motor wiring

Why we label these as ours

Bosch's pages give no signs for a motor fault, and a pattern we have seen on site is not a Bosch statement. Do not rely on any single row. A technician tests the machine and names the part.

What to note for the technician

When the fault happens: during filling, washing, draining or spinning. Our washing machine page says the point in the cycle narrows the cause faster than the code does. A video of the fault, ten seconds long, often settles the diagnosis before the visit, according to the same page.

Brushes, belt, motor or board: which part is it

Our washing machine page lists four items under "Not spinning": worn motor brushes on older models, the belt, the imbalance sensor and the motor wiring. A fifth, the control module, appears elsewhere on the page. They are different parts with different costs.

Part What it does, in plain terms Which machines What the fault looks like
Carbon brushes Carry power to a brushed motor Older models with a brushed motor The drum will not spin, or the machine stops mid-spin
Drive belt Links the motor to the drum, on machines that use one. This description is ours We do not say which models A drum that does not turn when the motor runs. The Bosch US page lists a worn belt as a possible cause
Imbalance sensor Detects an unbalanced load and stops or slows the spin Our page says Bosch machines detect an unbalanced load A spin that stops or slows on heavy loads
Motor wiring Carries power and signals to the motor Any An intermittent fault
Control module Runs the cycle and switches the motor Any A code or a machine that will not start. Our control board guide covers the dishwasher equivalent

Why a technician has to look

All five can stop a drum. A technician with the right equipment separates them. We do not name the part from the symptom, and Bosch's pages do not either.

What each fix involves

Our price table puts bearings, which need the tub to come apart, at the top of the spin repairs, at AED 380 to 780. A not-spinning repair on the parts above is AED 220 to 520. We quote the part by name after diagnosis.

Reading the fault by cycle stage

Our washing machine page says to write down when in the cycle the fault appeared, because that narrows the cause faster than the code does. For a spin fault, it gives you something a technician can use. This section is ours.

When you notice it What to write down
During filling Whether water enters, since a machine that cannot fill will not reach the spin
During washing Whether the drum turns normally and the water is warm
During draining Whether the water leaves. Bosch's pages say a blocked pump or hose is the first suspect
At the start of the spin Whether the drum turns at all, turns slowly, or lurches and stops
Mid-spin The point it stops, and any noise or smell

What each answer rules in or out

A machine that does not drain points at the pump and hose, which Bosch's pages cover. A machine that drains and then does not spin points at the load, the balance sensor or the drive. A machine that spins and then stops mid-spin is what our washing machine page associates with worn brushes on older models, and with an unbalanced load on any model.

A video helps

Our washing machine page says a ten-second clip of the noise when it spins often settles the diagnosis before the visit. Film from the side with the door closed, and keep clear of the drum.

Causes that are not the motor

Most of the spin faults Bosch's pages name are not in the motor at all. This table lists them with their source.

Cause Source Who deals with it
A blocked pump Bosch Singapore, Kuwait and US You, with the machine unplugged
A blocked or kinked drain hose Bosch Singapore, Kuwait and US You
An unbalanced load Bosch US ("one of the most common causes") You
Transport bolts left in Bosch UAE, via our washing machine page You, with a spanner. Bosch Egypt's sizes are on our bearing guide
Feet not level, lock nuts loose Our washing machine page You
Coins or underwire in the drum Our washing machine page You
Worn bearings Bosch US, on noise A technician

Why this matters for cost

Six of the causes above cost you nothing or very little. A technician is for the last one and for the motor, brush and board faults Bosch's pages leave unnamed. If a free check fixes it, you have saved the inspection.

Transport bolts

Bosch UAE says to remove the transport bolts immediately if they are still fitted. They lock the drum for shipping. If your machine was installed recently or moved, and the drum will not spin freely or the machine shakes violently, check the back before anything else.

Keeping a machine spinning

These habits come from the Bosch pages above and from our washing machine page. They protect the motor and the drum, whatever motor you have.

  • Balance the load. Bosch US says to wash large and small items together, close zips and buttons on pillows and duvet covers, and rearrange wet laundry that has bunched.
  • Check the pockets for coins and underwire. Our washing machine page says these rattle and jam.
  • Keep all four feet level and the lock nuts tight. Our washing machine page.
  • Keep the pump clean. Bosch Singapore and Kuwait. Our filter guide has the steps.
  • Do not overload the drum. Our washing machine page says heavy items such as duvets and towels bunch up, and that Bosch machines slow or stop the spin on an unbalanced load to protect themselves.

What we cannot give you

How often to check any of this, and how long brushes or a motor last. Bosch's pages give neither.

Questions to ask before you approve a quote

  1. Which part failed, and how was it confirmed? Brushes, belt, sensor, wiring, motor or board.
  2. Does my machine have a brushed motor? If a quote includes brushes, the technician should be able to say so from the E-Nr.
  3. Is the part confirmed for my E-Nr, and is it in stock?
  4. Is the AED 99 inspection credited?
  5. What is the warranty on the part and the labour? Ours is 90 days.
  6. Might Bosch's motor warranty apply? Ask Bosch before you pay for a motor repair.
  7. What if I decline? You pay the inspection and VAT.

A quote that cannot answer

A quote that cannot name the part has not finished diagnosing. Brushes fitted to a machine with a different fault cost you twice, and a motor replaced when the cause was the control module costs more.

The motor warranty: what the pages say and what they do not

Two Bosch pages mention a 10-year motor warranty, and it matters because a motor repair is one of the larger bills. It is also easy to overstate.

What the pages say

  • Bosch Australia: "we are able to offer a 10-year motor warranty on washing machine models that feature the EcoSilence Drive". It links to a document titled "Conditions of the 10 Year Bosch EcoSilence Drive Motor Warranty against Defects".
  • Bosch Hong Kong: the EcoSilence Drive motor "carries a 10-year warranty" on the Serie 6 page we read.
  • Our Serie 4 guide: Bosch advertises a 10-year motor warranty on selected models. It tells you to check the terms.

What they do not say

When the period starts, what it covers or excludes, which models qualify, how to claim, and whether it applies outside Australia and Hong Kong. We did not read the linked terms. The Australian page does not say it is limited to Australia, and it does not say it applies in the UAE.

What to do

Look in your manual or on your model's page for a motor warranty line. If the machine is a few years old and the motor fails, ask Bosch, quoting the E-Nr, whether the warranty applies before you pay for a motor. We do not tell you it does. Our independent service centre page explains how a warranty call and an independent repair fit together.

While you wait for a visit

Situation Our advice
The drum will not spin and the machine is full of water Unplug it, and drain it through the service flap as Bosch Singapore and Kuwait describe. Let hot water cool first
The machine stops mid-spin and shows a code Redistribute the load and restart once. If it stops again, leave it off. Our washing machine page says not to keep restarting
A smell of burning, a tripped breaker or water near the plug Switch off at the wall and do not use it
The machine spins but shakes violently Check the feet, the transport bolts and the load. If none explains it, book
The machine works on small loads only Our page says an unbalanced load slows or stops the spin. Book if the fault stays

An older machine: what to ask about parts

A machine with a brushed motor is by our reading an older machine. Age changes the repair in three ways. These points are ours.

  • Part availability. An older model may need a part ordered against the E-Nr, and the wait is longer than for a common part. Ask before approving.
  • The rest of the machine. Our washing machine page says the second fault tends to follow the first. Ask the technician what else is wearing.
  • The sum. Our rule is that a repair costing more than about half of a comparable new machine, or an old machine with two serious faults, points to replacing it. The rule is ours and not a Bosch figure.

What we will tell you

If the quote says to buy new, you owe only the inspection fee. Our washing machine page says so.

Safety and what to leave alone

  • Unplug before you touch the pump, the hose or the filter. Every Bosch page starts this way.
  • Do not remove the back or the top panel. The motor, the brushes and the wiring sit behind them and carry mains voltage.
  • Do not run a machine that smells of burning, trips the breaker or shows water near the plug. Switch off at the wall and book.
  • Do not force a drum that is stuck. A jam can be a coin, a wire or a bearing, and forcing it can damage the drum.
  • Do not buy brushes or a motor from a code. Bosch's pages name no part for a spin fault, so a part bought blind may be the wrong one.
  • Do not keep restarting a machine that stops on the same code. Our washing machine page says each restart adds wear to a failing part.

A note on hot water

If you drain the pump, the water may be hot. Bosch US warns of scalding. Let the machine cool first.

Matching the part to your E-Nr

Brushes, belts and motors are matched to the machine, and our washing machine page says the number a technician needs is the E-Nr on the rating plate. The plate is a sticker, usually on the edge of the door opening or on the back panel. Photograph it before you call.

Why the E-Nr matters here more than for most parts

It tells us which motor your machine was built with. That decides whether brushes exist, which part to bring and what the visit costs. We do not decide it from the series name, because Bosch's own pages use two motor names.

What to photograph

  • The rating plate, with the E-Nr and the FD production number if shown.
  • The display, with any code.
  • The drum, with the door open, if it will not turn.
  • The back of the machine, if you are checking the transport bolts.

Stock

Our washing machine page says we carry the common parts for popular Bosch models, and that model-specific parts are ordered once the fault is confirmed. A brush set, a belt or a motor is model-specific, so we check availability against your E-Nr before the visit. We do not claim a part is original Bosch because of a number. The part number appears on your invoice.

The visit and the cost

The AED 99 inspection includes the visit, the diagnosis and a written quote. If you approve the repair, the AED 99 comes off the repair price. If you decline, it is all you pay.

Typical costs, excluding 5% VAT

Fault What is done Time on site Price (AED)
Not spinning Replace the failed part: brushes on an older motor, a belt, a sensor, or motor wiring 60 to 120 min 220 – 520
Noisy drum, worn bearings Replace the bearings or dampers 2 to 4 hours 380 – 780
Control module fault Repair or replace the module 60 to 150 min 320 – 750

What moves the quote

The part decides most of it. Bearings take the most labour, since the tub often has to come apart. Access matters for a built-in machine, and stock decides whether one visit is enough.

A worked example

A technician confirms worn brushes on an older machine with a brushed motor. Suppose the all-in price is AED 330, which includes the AED 99 inspection. VAT adds AED 16.50, so you pay AED 346.50. If you decline the quote, you pay AED 99 plus AED 4.95 VAT, a total of AED 103.95. This is an illustration within our range and not a price list, and your quote names the part and the price.

The warranty

Every repair carries a 90-day warranty on the parts fitted and the labour for the repaired fault. If the same fault returns inside 90 days, we come back at no charge.

A machine with a motor warranty

Bosch Australia and Hong Kong mention a 10-year warranty on the EcoSilence Drive motor for some models. We did not read the terms, and the pages do not say whether it applies in the UAE. If your machine might be covered, ask Bosch before you pay for a motor repair. Our independent service centre page explains how to decide.

Repair or replace

Our washing machine page gives a rule: a repair costing more than about half of a comparable new machine, or an old machine with two serious faults, points to replacing it. Its worked example is an eleven-year-old machine with failing bearings and a weak motor, with a combined quote of AED 1,100 against about AED 2,200 new. That is 50% of the price on an old machine with two serious faults, and the page says to replace it.

Where a brush repair sits

A brush repair on an older machine is a repair on a machine that is already old. The question is what else is wearing: the bearings, the door seal, the pump. Count the faults and not only the quote in front of you.

A motor repair

A motor repair is one of the larger bills. Our washing machine page says bearings, motors and control modules deserve a closer look at the machine's age and condition. If the machine is young and sound, repair it. If the quote nears half the price of a new one, think again.

What to tell us

  • The E-Nr from the rating plate, as a photo.
  • What the drum does: nothing, a few turns, or it stops mid-spin.
  • When it fails: during filling, washing, draining or spinning.
  • What you checked: the load, the transport bolts, the feet, the hose, the pump.
  • A short video of the fault, with sound.
  • Any code, as a photo.
  • The age of the machine, and any earlier repairs.
  • Any smell, tripped breaker or water near the plug.
  • Access: built in or freestanding.

What the sources leave open

Bosch's pages leave several things open, and we would rather list them than fill them.

  • Which models have carbon brushes. Not listed on any page we read.
  • Whether EcoSilence Drive and SilentPowerDrive are the same motor. The pages do not say.
  • How long brushes last, and how a worn brush looks. Not covered.
  • How to replace brushes, a belt or a motor. No Bosch page we read gives steps.
  • The terms of the 10-year motor warranty, and where it applies. We did not read them.
  • What Bosch UAE says about a machine that will not spin. We could not read that page.
  • A price. None of the pages gives one.

If another site gives a confident answer to any of these, ask where it comes from.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Bosch washing machine have carbon brushes?

It depends on the motor. Bosch Australia and Hong Kong describe the EcoSilence Drive as working without carbon brushes. Older machines can have a brushed motor, and our washing machine page lists worn brushes for older models. The E-Nr settles it.

What does EcoSilence Drive mean?

Bosch Australia calls it "Bosch's most powerful motor to date". Its armature carries permanent magnets and is not supplied electricity "via carbon brushes".

Is SilentPowerDrive the same as EcoSilence Drive?

We cannot tell from Bosch's pages. They use both names, and neither page explains the difference.

Why will my Bosch washing machine not spin?

Bosch Singapore and Kuwait name a blocked pump or a kinked or blocked drain hose. Bosch US adds clothing under the agitator and an unbalanced load, which it calls one of the most common causes.

What does Bosch say about the motor or the belt?

Bosch US names a damaged motor and a worn drive belt only as possible causes, with no steps. The Singapore and Kuwait pages do not mention them.

Can I replace carbon brushes myself?

We do not recommend it. The brushes sit inside the machine behind panels that carry mains voltage, and the Bosch pages we read give no steps.

How do I check for transport bolts?

Our washing machine page says to look at the back of a machine that was just installed or moved for four long bolts. Bosch UAE says to remove them immediately if they are still fitted.

How much does it cost in Dubai?

A not-spinning repair is typically AED 220 to 520 before 5% VAT, with the AED 99 inspection credited if you approve. The written quote gives the exact figure.

Is it worth repairing?

Usually, if the machine is under about ten years old and the repair is under half the price of a new one. Our washing machine page gives examples, including an old machine with two serious faults that it says to replace.

Is there a 10-year warranty on the motor?

Bosch Australia and Hong Kong mention one for models with the EcoSilence Drive. We did not read the terms and do not know whether it applies in the UAE.

Why does my washing machine stop mid-spin?

Bosch US names an unbalanced load as one of the most common causes of a machine not spinning, and our washing machine page says Bosch machines slow or stop the spin on an unbalanced load to protect themselves. If a rebalanced load still stops, book.

My washing machine is under warranty. Should I still message you?

Contact Bosch first. We are an independent repair company and not an authorised Bosch agent, and a repair by us may not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty terms.
