How to Clean a Bosch Dishwasher Filter: How Often, With What, and What About Vinegar
Bosch's own pages give three different answers to "how often should I clean the dishwasher filter". Bosch US and Canada say "every few months". Bosch Malaysia says after every wash. Bosch Singapore and India say "regularly" and give no interval at all. The steps are easier to agree on, and this guide covers them, but the question that most owners actually ask, how often and with what, has no single Bosch answer.
This guide sets the pages side by side and then gives a rule of our own, labelled as ours. It covers what is in the filter, the cleaning steps, what to use and what to avoid, the vinegar question (Bosch has no dishwasher-filter page on it), what the debris in the filter tells you, and the rest of the machine that needs cleaning along with it. Every step and every figure carries the Bosch page and country it comes from.
If your dishwasher is already showing a code and the water is not leaving, go to our E22 guide or E24 guide first. They hold the full procedure for a filter that is blocked or badly seated, with the pump cover and hose checks that come after it. This page is for the routine job.
We are an independent Bosch appliance repair company, not the manufacturer, and we are not an authorised Bosch agent. If your dishwasher is inside Bosch's warranty, contact Bosch first. For faults and prices, see our Bosch dishwasher repair page.
At a glance
- Where it is: at the bottom of the tub, under the lower rack. Bosch US and Canada say so. Bosch UAE says to unlock the filter unit "at the base".
- How to clean it: take it out, separate the pieces, wash them in warm soapy water with a brush, rinse, dry and refit it securely. Bosch UAE adds that the two arrows must line up when it goes back.
- How often: Bosch's pages differ. Every few months (US, Canada), after every wash (Malaysia), "regularly" (Singapore, India). Our rule is further down.
- What to avoid: anything abrasive. Bosch UAE and Bosch Kuwait both say so.
- Vinegar: no Bosch dishwasher-filter page recommends it. Bosch UAE warns against vinegar in washing machines because it damages rubber parts. Bosch Egypt uses vinegar, without detergent, for cloudy glasses, which is a different job.
- Still not draining after a clean: that is a different problem. See the E22 and E24 guides.
What the filter is, and what is in it
The filter sits at the bottom of the tub. It catches food and debris before the water reaches the pump.
Bosch's pages do not name the parts the same way, and that is worth knowing before you try to follow a step.
- Bosch UAE calls it a "filter unit" at the base. It has a "cylindrical filter" that unscrews from the unit, and the page says to clean "both filters".
- Bosch US and Canada speak of "the filter", "the screen" and "the pieces". The screen separates from the filter, and each piece is cleaned on its own. A filter knob turns to the left.
- Bosch Uzbekistan, as our E22 guide describes it, lists a perforated metal plate, a frame and a cylindrical mesh filter, which come apart when you press the release latches.
- Bosch Kuwait says to release the filter unit and separate it.
The pages describe designs that differ in how the pieces release, and they do not say which models have which. Your booklet shows the design on your model.
Why a dirty filter matters
Bosch Canada states the goal in its own words: to ensure your dishwasher drains properly. Bosch US says elsewhere, on its E22 page, that the filter "needs to be cleaned regularly". Bosch India adds the reason: food debris goes into the dishwasher every time it is used. A blocked filter is also the first cause on Bosch's drainage code list, so a dishwasher that leaves water in the base after a cycle should be checked at the filter first.
How often: Bosch's answers compared
This is the question the pages answer least consistently. Here is every figure we found, with its source.
| Bosch page | Filter | Machine cleaner or care product |
|---|---|---|
| US and Canada, cleaning the filter | "Clean your filter every few months" | Not mentioned |
| Malaysia, cleaning your dishwasher | After every wash | Machine cleaner every 6 weeks to 3 months |
| Singapore, cleaning and care | "Regularly", no interval | Machine Cleaner powder every 4 to 6 months. Dishwasher Care product every 1 to 2 months, depending on use |
| India, how do I clean my dishwasher filter | "Regularly", no interval | Machine Cleaner powder every 4 to 6 months. Dishwasher Care product every 1 to 2 months, depending on use |
| UAE, not draining | No interval | Not mentioned |
| UAE, dishwasher smells bad | Check it is not blocked before a maintenance wash | Maintenance wash with Dishwasher Maintenance Cleaning Powder every 4 to 6 months, depending on use |
| US, dishwasher smells | "Regularly" | Bosch dishwasher cleaner and Bosch descaler "a few times a year" |
What the table shows
The filter figures run from "every wash" to "every few months". That is a wide gap, and the filter pages do not explain it. Only the product intervals are tied to use: Bosch UAE says its maintenance wash is every 4 to 6 months "depending on use", and Singapore and India say the same of the care product.
The machine cleaner figures differ as well. Malaysia gives 6 weeks to 3 months. Bosch UAE, Singapore and India give 4 to 6 months for the powder, and Singapore and India give 1 to 2 months for the separate care product. The US page says a few times a year. These may be different products, since Singapore and India describe two products and Malaysia one. Bosch does not say.
Our rule, built from how the filter works
This is our suggestion and not a Bosch statement. Our dishwasher overview already says that the interval depends on the load: plates that go in with food on them clog the filter faster. We apply that.
- Look at the filter once a month, by taking it out and checking. That costs a minute.
- Clean it whenever it holds more than a light film. A thin film of grease is normal. Visible food, a fibrous mat or any hard fragment means clean now.
- Clean it straight away after anything unusual: a cracked glass, a spilt jar, a bone or fruit stones that went in with the plates.
- If you scrape plates well, expect the long end of Bosch's range. If you rinse little, expect the short end. The Malaysia page's "after every wash" is the most cautious figure, and we do not think a lightly used machine needs it, but that is our judgement.
The point of the monthly look is that it replaces a guess with evidence. After two or three months you will know what your own kitchen does to the filter.
The cleaning steps, as Bosch gives them
Our E22 guide has an eight-step version with the sump and seating checks. Here are the three Bosch versions that matter, compared, so you can see where they agree.
Bosch UAE
- Remove the dishwasher rack.
- Unlock the filter unit at the base of the dishwasher and carefully pull it out.
- Unscrew the cylindrical filter to separate the unit.
- Clean both filters under running tap water. Use a small brush for the inside. Do not use anything abrasive.
- Reassemble the unit, put it back, and twist it until both arrows line up.
Bosch US and Canada
- Remove the bottom rack completely.
- Find the filter at the bottom of the tub. Turn the filter knob to the left and lift the filter out.
- Wash the filter in warm soapy water with a scrub brush.
- Separate the screen from the filter and clean each piece individually.
- Dry the filter and place it securely back in the dishwasher.
Where they agree and differ
Both start with the bottom rack and end with a firm refit. Both clean every part separately. The UAE version names a brush for the inside and a ban on abrasive tools, and it checks the refit with the arrows. The US and Canada version names warm soapy water and a scrub brush and says to dry the parts before refitting. The UAE version warns against abrasive tools. The US and Canada version lists no warnings. Neither says how to orient the filter, and the Canada page does not describe a seating check beyond "securely". The UAE arrows are the only seating check among the pages we read for this job. Bosch Uzbekistan's E22 wording, which our E22 guide reports, adds that the filter must click into place.
Our additions
These are ours and not Bosch's.
- Put a towel or a tray under the tub's edge if you tend to spill, because wet parts drip.
- Do the job with the machine cold and empty, and with the plug out or the breaker off. Bosch UAE's drain-hose steps say to disconnect from the power supply, though its filter steps do not, and a minute at the breaker costs nothing.
- Look at the sump, the space the filter sat in. Our E22 guide covers it. If the space holds debris you cannot lift out with a gloved hand, stop and read the pump section there.
What to use, and what not to
What Bosch names
- Warm soapy water and a brush. Bosch US and Canada name them. The pages name no particular soap.
- Running tap water. Bosch UAE names it for both filters.
- A small brush for the inside. Bosch UAE says so.
- Mild soap and a soft brush. Bosch US names these on its E22 page.
- A few drops of dish soap and a cleaning brush for stubborn build-up. Bosch Uzbekistan, as our E22 guide reports.
What Bosch warns against
- Anything abrasive. Bosch UAE says not to use it, on both its not-draining and smell pages. Bosch Kuwait says an abrasive can damage the filter.
- Sharp objects. Bosch UAE's smell page says to wear protective gloves if you find sharp objects, such as glass fragments.
- Nothing else. The US and Canada page lists no warnings, and the Malaysia page lists none.
What Bosch does not say
Bosch's filter pages do not say whether a dishwasher tablet, descaler or machine cleaner can be used on the filter itself. They do not say whether the filter can go in the dishwasher. They do not say what water temperature is too hot. We do not guess at any of these.
The machine cleaner
Bosch Malaysia describes a Bosch dishwasher machine cleaner as "highly recommended for dishwashers" and tested for dishwashers. Bosch Singapore and India describe a Machine Cleaner powder and a Dishwasher Care product. The Singapore page says the powder removes starch, protein and grease residues, and the care product removes grease and limescale. The pages do not say what the products contain, and we do not know. They name the products and not their ingredients.
Bosch UAE's dishwasher smell page names the Dishwasher Maintenance Cleaning Powder and does not say how to order it. Its washing machine and microwave pages say to order Bosch cleaning products through an Authorized Service Center, and that is the route we would try. We do not claim a retail source.
Vinegar: what Bosch does and does not say
Vinegar is the question most likely to lead owners astray. It comes up for the filter, for the machine and for cloudy glasses, and Bosch's pages treat each differently.
For the filter itself
We found no Bosch page that recommends vinegar for cleaning the dishwasher filter. The filter, smell and cleaning pages we read, from the UAE, the US, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore and India, do not mention it. So there is no Bosch instruction to follow, and anything we said beyond that would be our own idea.
For the machine
Bosch's dishwasher cleaning pages name Bosch's own products instead: the maintenance powder on the UAE page, and the dishwasher cleaner and descaler on the US page.
For washing machines: a warning
Bosch UAE has a page titled as a question about cleaning a washing machine with vinegar. Its answer is no. It says vinegar is "not recommended because it causes too much damage to the rubber parts in the machine". It recommends Bosch's washing machine cleaner instead, and says to use it every 3 months.
That page is about washing machines, and we do not claim it applies to dishwashers. It is the only Bosch UAE page we found that speaks about vinegar and a machine's rubber parts. A dishwasher also has rubber parts, including a door seal. Our reading is that the washing machine page is a reason for caution. That is an inference and not a Bosch rule for dishwashers, and the safe course is to follow your booklet and Bosch's own cleaner.
For cloudy glasses: a different job
Bosch Egypt's page on cloudy glasses does use vinegar, and the context matters. Its method is to pour white vinegar into a flat bowl, place it in the dishwasher with the glasses, and run a normal cleaning programme without detergent, because detergent is alkaline and neutralises the vinegar's acid. It also suggests lemon juice and, by hand, plain white toothpaste, and it lists prevention: rinse aid in every cycle, salt regularly, and descale regularly.
That page is about glasses, and it puts the vinegar in a bowl, not on the filter. It also says the cloudiness is either glass corrosion, which cannot be reversed, or limescale, which comes from hard water that is not adequately softened. Our dishwasher repair page has the full cloudiness section, including the quick test it describes.
What follows for the filter
If you are thinking of soaking the filter in vinegar, the honest position is that Bosch gives no guidance for it. Soapy water and a brush are what Bosch names. If limescale is a problem in your machine, Bosch's pages point you to the softener setting, salt, rinse aid and the descaler. They do not point you to vinegar on the filter.
What you find in the filter, and what it tells you
The filter shows you what has been going on in the machine. This section is our reading, helped by the things Bosch's pages and our other guides name.
Glass fragments
Bosch Kuwait lists slivers of glass among the things that can clog the filters and the pump. Our E22 guide says to keep any glass you find, because it tells you the pump may have been exposed to it. Bosch UAE's smell page adds that you should wear protective gloves if you find sharp objects. If you find fragments in the filter, check the sump as the E22 guide describes. Our suggestion is not to run a long cycle until you are sure the pump area is clear. If the water is also draining badly afterwards, read the pump cover section there and our drain pump replacement guide.
Food, bones and fruit stones
Large pieces are a sign that plates went in with solid food on them. Our dishwasher overview says bones, seeds and peel are what block the filter and the pump, and recommends scraping off solid food. The filter is doing its job when it catches them.
A film of grease
Our overview says a steady diet of low-temperature programmes can let grease build up in the pump and spray arms, so a hot cycle now and then is worth running. That is a suggestion in our overview and not a Bosch statement. Bosch UAE's smell page makes a related point: a wash temperature that is too low is one of its three causes of smell, and it recommends a rinse programme at a higher temperature.
A chalky white crust
Our reading is that a hard white crust on the filter is limescale. We have no Bosch dishwasher page that says so for the filter. Bosch Egypt links limescale to hard water that is not adequately softened, and tells you to set the softening level to your water's hardness. If you see the crust together with cloudy glasses, the softener setting, salt and rinse aid are the first things to check, as our dishwasher repair page explains.
Cracks or damage
Our E22 guide says to look for a cracked part if the filter will not lock. If a part is cracked, tell us the model code and we confirm the part. We found no Bosch or UAE price for a filter, so we quote none.
Nothing at all
An almost empty filter after weeks of use is good news, and it is evidence for the long end of Bosch's interval range.
When the smell or the dirty dishes are the filter
Two complaints that owners do not connect with the filter often start there, and Bosch UAE has a page for each.
A smell from the dishwasher
Bosch UAE's page on a dishwasher that smells bad names three common causes. The first is overdue maintenance, with odours building up "especially around the areas which are made of plastic". The second is a soiled filter: food can block it, so waste water is not pumped out effectively. The third is a wash temperature that is too low, and the fix it gives is a rinse programme at a higher temperature. It gives no temperature for that rinse and refers you to the booklet.
The page's maintenance wash is the most complete routine Bosch UAE gives for a dishwasher, and it fits in a few steps.
- Unload the dishwasher. The page recommends cleaning right after a cycle.
- Check the filter is not blocked with food or other objects, and clean it with the steps above.
- Run a programme of at least 65 °C.
- After 30 minutes, pause the cycle. Open the door carefully and empty the Dishwasher Maintenance Cleaning Powder into the appliance.
- Restart the programme and let it finish.
The page says to do this every 4 to 6 months, depending on use. If the problem persists, it suggests a Bosch service expert and lists BSH 048030400. Bosch US's smell page gives a looser version: a Bosch dishwasher cleaner a few times a year, run on the hottest, longest cycle, and a Bosch descaler on the same terms, followed by another wash.
What the pages do not say is how to tell which of the three causes you have. Our suggestion is to check them in the order that costs least. Look at the filter first, because it is free. If the filter is clean and the smell persists, run the hotter programme. If it still persists, use the maintenance powder.
Dishes that do not come clean
Bosch UAE's page on a dishwasher that is not cleaning the dishes is short, and the filter is its first step. It gives three: clean the filter, stack the dishes correctly without overloading and check that the spray arms can turn fully after loading, and remove coarse food waste but do not pre-rinse dishes under running water.
The page gives no details on where the filter is or how to clean it, and it does not mention detergent, salt, rinse aid or programme choice. Our dishwasher repair page covers those causes. The "do not pre-rinse" advice is worth noticing, because many owners do the opposite. The page does not say why, and we do not guess at the reason. It does fit with the filter point: scraping coarse food off keeps it out of the filter, which is a different thing from running dishes under the tap.
Beyond the filter: seals, spray arms and nozzles
A clean filter does not make a clean dishwasher. Bosch Malaysia gives the shortest checklist of the pages we read.
- Seals and door area. Wipe with a damp cloth. Use a cloth soaked in soapy water where needed. The page says to use soapy water only where necessary.
- Filter. Clean it after every wash, on that page.
- Spray arms. Check that they are clean. The page links a video and gives no written steps.
- Nozzles. Clean them with a toothpick. Again a video, with no written steps.
Bosch Singapore says spray arms "should be cleaned periodically" and gives no interval or method. Bosch India says the same. Bosch US's smell page is more specific: run water through the spray arms to see whether any holes are blocked, and loosen debris with a toothpick. Bosch UAE's page on dishes that do not come clean asks whether the spray arms can turn fully after loading.
Our additions
We have no Bosch written steps for the spray arms, so we do not write a method for removing them. The booklet for your model shows whether the arms come off. If dishes come out dirty, the cause may be a blocked nozzle, a spray arm that has come loose or a rack that blocks the arm, as our dishwasher repair page describes. Water that drains but dishes that stay dirty is a spray arm or circulation job and not a filter job.
The monthly routine
Put together, a month's care from the Bosch pages looks like this: take out the filter and look at it, clean it if it holds more than a light film, wipe the door seal, check the spray arm and nozzles, and use a machine cleaner at the interval on its pack. The intervals for the cleaner differ between Bosch's pages, so follow the pack.
After cleaning: the seating check and the first wash
A clean filter that is not seated can cause the same trouble as a dirty one. Bosch Uzbekistan says filters can be clogged or not seated correctly, and that they must click into place and line up with the arrows. Bosch UAE says to twist the unit until both arrows line up.
Check it before you close the door
- Look at the arrows. On the UAE version they should line up.
- Press down gently. The filter should sit flat and not rock.
- Check there is no debris in the housing under it.
If it will not lock, look for debris in the housing or a cracked part. Our E22 guide covers that.
The first wash
Run a normal programme and watch the base afterwards. If dirty water stays in the base, the filter was not the only problem. Bosch's drain checks continue with the pump cover, the hose and the airgap, and our E24 guide sets them out. Bosch UAE's own test for the hose is to run the drain programme into a bucket and check for leaks.
When it is not the filter
If you cleaned the filter, seated it, and the machine still leaves water, or a code returns, the next places are the pump cover, the hose and the sink waste. Our dishwasher repair page puts the not-draining range at AED 160 to 340, excluding 5% VAT, and our drain pump replacement guide covers the case where the pump itself has failed. The AED 99 inspection is credited to the repair if you go ahead.
What Bosch's pages leave you to work out
Across the Bosch pages we read for this guide, a handful of practical questions have no answer. We list them so you know where you are on your own, and where the booklet for your model has to decide.
- Which design you have. The UAE, US, Canada and Uzbekistan pages describe different release actions: unlocking a unit, turning a knob left, pressing latches. None says which models use which.
- How long a clean filter lasts. The intervals run from every wash to every few months, with no stated basis.
- Whether the filter can go in the dishwasher, or how hot the water may be.
- Whether any product other than soapy water is safe on the filter. The abrasive warning is the only restriction given.
- What a replacement filter costs, and whether it is sold separately. We found no Bosch or UAE price.
- What the right wash temperature is for the rinse programme on the smell page. The UAE page refers you to the booklet.
For every one of these, the booklet for your model code is the document to trust, and the model code on the rating plate is how to find it. Our Serie 4 and Serie 6 dishwasher guides explain the codes for those ranges.
What to tell us if the code returns
- The code on the display, and when it appeared: filling, washing, draining or drying.
- The model code from the rating plate, as a photo.
- What you found in the filter, especially glass.
- Whether the filter clicked into place, and whether the arrows lined up.
- Whether water stands in the base after a cycle, and how much.
- Access: your building, apartment number and parking. For an integrated machine, say whether a cabinet panel hides it.
A short video of the machine at the end of a cycle, with the filter out, helps. Send it by WhatsApp.
A dishwasher that takes no water can also have a clogged screen at the hose connection, which is a different filter from this one. Our inlet valve and filter guide explains the difference.
If the filter is clean and the dishes are still dirty, check the spray arms next. Our rack and spray arm guide explains how.
Frequently asked questions
How do I clean the filter on a Bosch dishwasher?
Remove the bottom rack, take the filter out (turn the knob left on the US and Canada version, or unlock the unit on the UAE one), separate the pieces, wash them in warm soapy water with a brush, rinse, dry and refit them securely. On Bosch UAE's version, twist the unit until both arrows line up. Do not use anything abrasive.
How often should I clean a Bosch dishwasher filter?
Bosch's pages differ: every few months (US, Canada), after every wash (Malaysia), "regularly" (Singapore, India). Our rule is to look at it once a month and clean it whenever it holds more than a light film.
Can I clean a Bosch dishwasher filter with vinegar?
We found no Bosch dishwasher-filter page that recommends it. Bosch UAE warns that vinegar damages rubber parts in washing machines. Bosch Egypt uses vinegar, without detergent, for cloudy glasses, which is a different job. Soapy water and a brush are what Bosch names for the filter.
Where is the filter in a Bosch dishwasher?
At the bottom of the tub, under the lower rack. Bosch US and Canada say so, and Bosch UAE says the filter unit is at the base.
Is the drain filter the same as the dishwasher filter?
We found no Bosch page that treats them as separate parts. The pages describe a filter at the base that you remove, and, below it, a pump area with a cover. The filter is the part you clean as routine care. The pump cover belongs to the drain checks in our E24 guide.
Can I put the filter in the dishwasher to clean it?
Bosch's pages do not say. They name warm soapy water and a brush. Follow your booklet.
My dishwasher still will not drain after I cleaned the filter. What next?
Check that the filter is seated, then follow the pump cover, hose and airgap checks in our E24 guide. If those are clear and the code returns, the pump may have failed.
Do I need a machine cleaner as well?
Bosch's pages recommend one but disagree on how often: every 6 weeks to 3 months (Malaysia) or every 4 to 6 months (Singapore, India). Follow the pack.
Why does my Bosch dishwasher smell, and can the filter be the cause?
Yes. Bosch UAE names a soiled filter as one of three common causes, with overdue maintenance and a wash temperature that is too low. Clean the filter, run a hotter programme, and then use the maintenance powder, which Bosch UAE says to do every 4 to 6 months.
Should I rinse dishes before they go in the dishwasher?
Bosch UAE's page on dishes that do not come clean says to remove coarse food waste but not to pre-rinse under running water. It does not give a reason.
My dishwasher is under warranty. Should I message you?
Contact Bosch first. Bosch UAE lists BSH 048030400. We are an independent repair company, not an authorised Bosch agent, and a repair by us may not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty terms.
